Poster by Gerrit Kiljan.
Photography was used extensively in the design of stamps. The starting point for an engraving was often a photograph. In 1931, Piet Zwart introduced “photomontage” in making the stamps. Designer Gerrit Kiljan was also commissioned for a photography assignment for children’s stamps (charity stamps for disabled children) in 1931. He chose to depict the deprived children themselves so as to show for whom the proceeds of the sale of children’s stamps were meant.
The reactions to the stamps varied from positive to extremely negative. The Dutch Association for Protection of Children stated that despite the period of crisis the proceeds “were much better than expected”, but that the high sales “should not have been achieved using a method that cannot stand the test of ethical validation”.
Kiljan also used the controversial photos on the poster. They depict a deaf and dumb child receiving speech lessons, a neglected child, a mentally retarded child and a blind girl. The photographs and text placed diagonally on the poster show the dynamics of the “New Typography”. The message of the poster is clear and very direct.
