- Bakkeljauw of batjaw is geen inheemse surinaamse vis, maar een voor consumptie bereide, gespouwen, gedroogde en gezouten heek of schelvis. Deze werd reeds sinds de 17e eeuw uit Atlantisch Noord-Amerika aangevoerd om als volksvoedsel te dienen. De naam zou zijn ontleend aan het Baskische bakkelao of het Spaanse bacalao en is afgeleid van het Latijnse woord baculum, stok.
