Numerous maps and atlases were drawn up in the Netherlands in the 17th century, particularly in Amsterdam. These did not only show the land, but also the sea and the heavens. This illustration of the ‘heavenly square’ was printed around 1700 by Johannes van Keulen, a printer with the fitting address ‘New bridge in the Crowned Loadsman’. This print with movable parts explained how to use Van Keulen’s celestial maps.
