Johanna Westerdijk’s appointment as extraordinary professor for plant diseases in 1917 was an unprecedented event: it was the first time that a woman was appointed professor in the Netherlands. The institute that gave her this position – the University of Utrecht – owns the largest collection of educational wall charts concerning plant diseases (phytopathology) in the Netherlands. These wall charts show the damage done to plants at microscopic and/or macroscopic levels. Many phytopathologic wall charts are the work of D. van der Zweep, a well-known graphic artist, who was employed by the University of Utrecht since 1920.
