Multatuli wrote De bruid daarboven during in stay in the Netherlands East Indies. It was originally entitled De Eerloze (The dishonorable). It is a play about the love between a music teacher and his blue-blooded pupil, written in a romantic style reminiscent of August Lafontaine, and it was performed for he first time in 1865.
