Zie, Leezer! hier Verscheidenheid Van Bouwmans nutten arrebeid [See, Reader! here a Variety of the farmer’s useful labour]
Several catchpenny prints show in a detailed way what is involved in farmwork. Agriculture with ploughing, harrowing, sowing, mowing and threshing; cattle breeding with milking, churning, making butter and cheese, keeping cattle, shearing the sheep are displayed. One would expect that in bygone centuries this work was so close and so visible that illustrating it was unnecessary, because everyone knew where the food came from. It is apparent in these prints that people were proud of this national business sector, and that it fostered romantic feelings, as Poot already wrote in his poem ‘Akkerleven’ [Country life] (1720): ‘How nice and easy is the life of the peaceful farmer’.
