Garde impériale Turque = Keizerlijke garde van Turkije [Imperial guard of Turkey]
In the nineteenth century, with the striving for unified states and the accompanying feelings of patriotism, playing at soldiers was more popular than it is nowadays. This is shown in children’s books and in catchpenny prints. The Flemish publishers in particular put quite a lot of ‘militaria’ prints on the market, representing soldiers from many countries and regions. Here a Turkish army unit is shown: the imperial guard, provided with swords, rifles with bayonets and bow and arrow. Frequently, these decorative prints contain identical woodcuts. They were probably intended to be cut out so as to play war with them.
