New Alphabet
At the agency, Wim Crouwel and Jurriaan Schrofer were especially interested in experimenting with typefaces. In 1967, Crouwel designed the so-called New Alphabet.
This alphabet is based on a point matrix system and, therefore, computers are able to ‘read’ it. The characters have abstract shapes. In Crouwel’s thinking, a letter is a neutral instrument that should be subservient to the message it conveys.
The New Alphabet was introduced in a publication known as a Quadratprint. The series of Quadratprints was published by the lithographic printing office De Jong between 1955 and 1974. These publications displayed innovations in the field of graphic design. The Quadraprint on the New Alphabet was rather controversial and generated various counterproposals.
The image features the Italian typography magazine Linea Grafica, in which the New Alphabet is applied to the journal’s logo.
