Quality is our advertising (Lucky Strike).
The cigarette brand Lucky Strike was established in 1871. The name refers to the gold rush; the entire country of America was under its spell. Every gold digger hoped for the “lucky strike” with which he would uncover that one vein rich in gold. The packaging was dark green with the name in a red circle surrounded by a yellow circle.
In 1942, the famous designer Raymon Loewy (1893-1986) modernized the packaging to the now so famous white background with rigid typography in the red circle.
In this poster dated 1995, Loewy’s design has lost some of its strength as a result of the way in which others have added the text Luckies. Three years later Lucky Strike completely disappeared from the streets: as of 1 January 1998, tobacco advertising has been banned in the Netherlands.
