Five male board members (regents) of the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital sitting around the table in the regents room. The St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, the hospital for the poor, was located on the Groot Heiligland, across from the current Fans Hals Museum. The regents were appointed for one year.
The painting portrays, from left to right, Siewert Sem Warmont, Salomon Cousaert, Johan van Clarenbeeck (secretary, depicted with a book), Dirck Dircksz Del (chairman) and François Wouters (clearly the treasurer symbolized by the coins lying on the table in front of him). The regents are dignified and serious, their clothing is plain black, in keeping with the fashion at the time and their position in a charitable institute. The map on the wall in the background of the painting possibly points to one of the tasks of the regents of the hospital: they managed the land owned by the hospital.
St. Elizabeth’s Hospital also had four female board members (regentesses). They were also portrayed in 1641, by Johannes Verspronck. These two regent paintings by Hals and Verspronck, dated 1641, were the first made in Haarlem.
