- Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), dochter van graveur Matthias Merian en stiefdochter van de Nederlandse bloemenschilder Jacob Marrel, bestudeerde en tekende bloemen en insecten. Vanaf 1684 woonde ze in Nederland, in Friesland en Amsterdam en onderhield ze contacten met beroemde verzamelaars. In juni 1699 vertrok Merian naar Suriname om de ontwikkeling van tropische insecten, vooral vlinders, te bestuderen en te tekenen. Ze tekende de dieren op hun - veronderstelde- voedselplanten. In juni 1701 keerde Merian naar Holland terug en in 1705 gaf zij in eigen beheer het boek Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium uit, een plaatwerk met 60 kopergravures in een Latijnse en Nederlandse uitgave. Postuum, in 1719, verscheen bij Johan Oosterwijk een Latijnse en Nederlandse uitgave van de Metamorphosis, uitgebreid met 12 platen van reptielen, amfibieën en buidelratten. Merians beschrijvingen van planten en insecten geven de stand van de wetenschap anno 1705. Voor recente wetenschappelijke beschrijvingen verwijzen we naar de facsimile-uitgave van de Metamorphosis door W. Stearn en E. Rücker uit 1982.
