Het riemen wil neet meer (Versifying does not work any more)
Johanna F. van Buren (1881-1962)
The Deventer author Herman Korteling thought the world of the poet Johanna F. van Buren, who came from the village of Hellendoorn and who wrote poems in local dialect. He treated her as a real diva. In her letters to Korteling, she very much put the quality of her poetry into perspective. It also seems that her poor health greatly influenced her moods and, as a result, she announced from time to time that she was hardly able to write poems, if at all. In January 1959 at 77 years of age, she sighs in her last letter to Korteling: “[…] het riemen wil neet meer […]" ([…] ‘versifying’ does not work any more […]).
