Interior of an architect’s own house, Prins Hendriklaan 112, Utrecht, 1932-1934. Architect: S. van Ravesteyn. Photographer: unknown.
In 1932, Van Ravesteyn built a new house for himself in Utrecht. Just as the Rietveld Schröder House, that had been completed a year earlier, it stood at the end of the Prins Hendriklaan, an avenue bordering pastures, its vacant side overlooking natural scenery.
Here too, Gezond wonen (healthy living) was the motto, although Van Ravesteyn chose altogether different shapes to express this creed than Rietveld. An enormous living space, also serving both as a study and a dining room, takes up almost the entire ground floor. The sitting area is located in the semicircular part of the house, which features a roof garden instead of a second story, like the rest of the house. Van Ravesteyn loved curved lines and this represented a departure from the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid trend of the 1930s. However, as Van Ravensteyn did not design the furniture himself, the interior of his own house is much less art deco than that of many other houses he built. The tube chairs shown here were designed by Thonet.
