Brooch fibula
Circa 800 AD, gold, precious stones, enamel, glass, diameter Ø 8,4 cm, Wijk bij Duurstede (province of Utrecht)
During excavations in 1969 in Wijk bij Duurstede, this magnificent golden brooch was found on the bottom of a water well. It is encrusted with precious stones. The symbolism of the decorations (such as two crosses) is Christian. The pin to attach it to clothing is missing.
This piece of jewelry is so valuable that the owner has probably not worn it daily. How it ended up in the well remains a mystery. Possibly it was hidden in the well at the time of the Viking attacks in the ninth century.
