Isaac Israels
Painter Isaac Israels writes to Witsen from Hamburg: Have you ever heard such a thing, someone really wanting to visit London but ending up in Hamburg in stead? There are things of such horrible colour here.’ To prove his point, Israels adds some quick drawings of the city centre. The only aspect of it he does like are the ‘carts, boats, chunks of city and red light districts, lovely by night but the girls are damn cheeky.’
