Netherlands, C.H.C. Wiedemann. 1825
During the 19th century the decorative arts showed a highly imaginative use of historic styles such as the Gothic of the Middle Ages, the Dutch Renaissance and the French Rococo. Never before had so many different styles been used, often mixed together, to decorate objects.
This binding by Wiedemann was made early in the period of these developments. This binding can be classified as belonging to the classical style. The binder used rolls and stamps with decorations derived from the classical art and architecture. The angular meander and the lyre stamped in gold are clear examples. The strict division on the cover was accentuated by applying wafer thin pieces of leather, in different colors, on the red leather binding. A number of Wiedemann’s bindings, including this one, were presented to King William I as gifts.
