Paul Verlaine, November 1892. Photo by Philip Zilcken
In 1892, the French poet Paul Verlaine visited the Netherlands. He gave lectures and met Kloos, Verwey and others from the Movement of the Eighties. In his diary he wrote: “Verwey’s hair stood upright all over his head. Mind you, this was the only frightening thing about his really kind, almost childlike expression.” Verlaine stayed with the artist Philip Zilcken, who took this photograph.
