‘Mijnheer Prikkebeen’ by J.J.A. Goeverneur is considered the first Dutch comic. However, it is not actually Dutch. The Swiss teacher, writer and illustrator Rodolphe Töpffer (1799-1846) wrote the original ‘Histoire de Monsieur Cryptogame’. On the basis of a German adaptation, Goeverneur turned it into a story for children.
