- In 1968 werd in het Surinaamse binnenland een groep inheemsen ontdekt die nog leefde als in het stenen tijdperk, de Akurio. In reactie op die ontdekking schreef Thea Doelwijt de novelle 'Wajono' (1969). Een indiaan komt in contact met de stadscultuur. Hij leert de stadstaal en komt in huis bij de uit Nederland afkomstige half-Surinaamse schrijfster Joyce. De indiaan zal uiteindelijk toch niet passen in de bureaucratische welvaartsmaatschappij en keert terug naar het bos. Thema is de botsing van culturen, waarbij Doelwijt uitgaat van een geïdealiseerde inheemse mens en de moraal van de eenheid van alle Surinamers sterk aanwezig is.
