- In de jaren '20 werden auto's in constructiewerkplaatsen nog voor een groot deel met de hand gebouwd. Nu is de productie voor 90 % geautomatiseerd. De productie van een auto is onderverdeeld in verschillende fases. De bouw van de carrosserie en de motor zijn gescheiden. De laatste fase van de montagelijn is het zogenaamde huwelijkspunt: de motor wordt in de carrosserie geplaatst. Op de foto is een werknemer van Volvo zichtbaar die zich bezighoudt met de eindmontage van de 'aandrijfgroep'. Simpel gezegd omvat de aandrijving van een auto alle onderdelen die nodig zijn om ervoor te zorgen dat een auto daadwerkelijk kan rijden. Deze onderdelen zijn de motor, de versnellingsbak en nog enkele kleinere onderdelen. De motor wordt afgemonteerd, gereedgemaakt. Het afmonteren gebeurt met behulp van een mini-computer. Deze mini-computer geeft aan hoe het werk precies moet worden uitgevoerd. Op verschillende plekken in het productieproces staat een terminal. Daarop staan aanwijzingen hoe het werk precies moet worden uitgevoerd. De auto's worden namelijk in verschillende uitvoeringen geleverd, en daarbij horen ook verschillende aanwijzingen. Deze wijze van produceren is overigens niet uniek voor Volvo, maar is bij meerdere autoproducenten terug te vinden.
