Courtyard in the house in Strand Street where in 1751 the Abbé de la Caille fixed the first point of his triangulation. The house has long been removed. The lines on the wall, a mid-day sundial, are directly above the spot where the point was fixed. The measurements of an arc of the Meridian by de la Caille were verified by Sir Thomas Maclear, and found to be astonishingly correct considering the imperfect instruments then in use.
