- In 1778 denkt een reiziger dat hij een Aziatische kolonie betreedt wanneer hij de kleding van de Hindelooper vrouwen en kinderen ziet. De katoenen en zijden stoffen, die de V.O.C.-schepen aanvoeren, waren in het hele land geliefd. Exotische namen als douras, hamman en salempoeri gaven de herkomst, de afmetingen en het patroon van de stoffen aan. Met name sits, beschilderd met kleurrijke bloempatronen viel in de smaak. De 'Japonse rok', een soort kimono, werd zeer populair als kamerjas voor heren van stand. Bij feestelijke gelegenheden droeg de vrouw een kort jakje, "het kassakijntjen", of een getailleerde lange mantel, "de wentke". Beide zijn vanaf midden 18e eeuw bijna altijd van sits. Voor feestelijke gelegenheden kon de kleur rood zijn of groen. Maar voor de bruidsdracht was de sits wit met rode bloemranken. Deze stof werd dan "melk en bloed" genoemd. Bij rouw werd een sits gebruikt die blauwe bloemen op een wit fond had.
