During the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) 55,000 Boers of the Transvaal and Orange Free State fought a guerilla war against 500,000 British soldiers under the leadership of Generals Christiaan de Wet, Jan Smuts, Louis Botha and Koos de la Rey. The Boer Generals were looked upon as heroes ‘of Dutch descent’ by countrymen.
