Cake at the Van Riebeeck commemoration in Cape Town on board the ship “Oranjefontein?, 1952
In 1952, a commemoration took place in both South Africa and the Netherlands to celebrate the fact that Jan van Riebeeck had first set foot in South Africa on 6 April 1652. The celebrations were accompanied by fancy dinners, exhibitions and a wreath laying. This photo shows pastry being made especially for this occasion on board the ship “Oranjefontein”: cake in the shape of Cape Dutch style houses, ships and the Tafelberg.
