By mistake
Nijmegen, Enschede and Arnhem were accidentally attacked in February 1944 by allied bombers that mistakenly thought they were flying over Germany. Five hundred inhabitants were killed and material damages were enormous. German propaganda cleverly used this "brutish Anglo-American terrorist attack on helpless citizens" for propaganda purposes, in which posters played an important part.
The Germans were satisfied with the poster featured on this page. The poster was submitted to an advisory committee of the Department of Information and Arts for a judgment from the Dutch perspective. Its assessment must have come as a severe disappointment: "The image of Nijmegen is politically incorrect, as it makes one immediately recall Rotterdam 1940. Much of the impact of the fact itself is hereby lost."
