- Uchida was the commanding officer of the Japanese naval officers who came to the Netherlands in 1862 to follow the construction of the steamship Kaiyo-maru, which was being built by order of the Japanese government. In the Netherlands, they took courses in navigation techniques and visited enterprises and institutions.
