- Porselein is vóór de aanvoer van de V.O.C. nauwelijks bekend. Aan het begin van de 17de eeuw vinden de eerste porseleinveilingen plaats in Middelburg en Amsterdam. Kooplieden uit omringende landen kopen hier het blauw-witte Chinese porselein. Het porselein komt verpakt in stro en papier aan, maar al snel wordt de thee het meest gebruikte stopmiddel. Bij aankomst was gemiddeld vijf tot zes procent van het porselein gebroken. Ambachtslieden maken het oosterse porselein al snel na. Zo ontstaat het Delfts blauw.
