- Description
- ‘Notitie van nombers, namen en gewichten van tulpen’ is an eight-page printed price list for tulips, dated 16 May 1708 and compiled by Rotterdam merchant Henricus van der Heym. Van der Heym’s garden was located at the outskirts of Rotterdam, east of the Schiekade. According to newspaper advertisements of the time, he often sold large collections of tulips and other exotic plants in his garden. Buyers could visit the garden one day in advance, and sometimes a printed catalogue was distributed, like this one. It includes a number of manuscript annotations, indicating the prices of the plants. The first flower bed with 70 tulips fetched nearly 5.000 guilders. The Fagel collections contains ten printed and handwritten plant lists, all inserted to a painted tulipbook with shelfmark MS 1706. Some of the printed catalogues are dated 1707-1718. This was exactly the period in which Francois Fagel constructed a new garden behind his magnificent house in the Hague, bordering the magnificent Stadholder’s gardens at the Noordeinde.
