- In de 17e eeuw maakten Fransen, Engelsen en Nederlanders, met name Zeeuwen, wisselend aanspraak op de gebieden tussen de monding van de Orinoco- en Amazone rivier in Zuid-Amerika, ook wel 'De Wilde kust' genoemd. Reeds rond 1600 werd er door Zeeuwse kooplieden handel gedreven met de Indianen in de nabijheid van de Cayenne rivier. In 1654 vestigden zich een groot aantal Joodse kolonisten. Zij waren verdreven toen de Portugezen de Nederlandse kolonie Brazilië veroverden. In 1664 kwam dit gebied definitief in Franse handen en vluchtten de daar gevestigde kolonisten naar Suriname. Cayenne werd de zetel van het koloniale bestuur van Frans Guyana. Opvallend is de aanduiding Rokou-plantage onder Legenda. De Indiaanse naam Rokou (Rocou) - door de Europeanen ook wel Orleans of Oriaan genoemd - is een rode verfstof bereid uit Bixa Orellana. Voor kooplieden tot het midden van de 18e eeuw een zeer gewild artikel van handel met de Indianen. Het werd gebruikt voor o.a. het verven van textiel of kleuren van kaas.
