- Description
- Enomoto had attended the Dutch naval school in Nagasaki since 1856.In the period between 1863 and 1866; he went to the Netherlands to study the art of navigation. In 1868 Enomoto was promoted to second in command of the Japanese Navy. After the Emperor’s supporters had overthrown the government in 1868, Enomoto refused to surrender his fleet to them. He fled to Hokkaido, in the North of Japan, with his steamships, where he and his followers founded the independent republic of Ezo. Within a year, however, the young republic was defeated by the imperial troops. But Kuroda Kiyotaka (1840-1900), who was in command of the imperial armies, spared Enomoto, who later went on to hold ministerial posts in different governments.
