In 1971 startte Man Vrouw Maatschappij de actie Marie, word wijzer! - gericht op het vergroten van de onderwijsdeelname van meisjes, zodat ook hun maatschappelijke kansen zouden groeien. In 1972 werd een aparte stichting Marie, word wijzer opgericht, waaraan ook andere vrouwenorganisaties deelnamen. De poster werd op grote schaal verspreid naar scholen en buurthuizen.
