President S.J.P. Kruger photographed in The Hague, 1900
Paul Kruger became president of the South African Republic (Transvaal) in 1880. During the following decades, ‘Uncle Paul’, as he was affectionately known, was regarded as a national hero in the Netherlands because of his pro-Dutch policy. He had to flee his country during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). He left for Europe on board a Dutch warship.
