- Foto, zw/w. De liggende Buddha in de Tempel van de Slapende Buddha. — Deze Tempel van de Slapende Buddha ligt in Xiangshan (de Geurende Heuvels) in de omgeving van Beijings Zomerpaleis. Hij dateert uit de Tang-dynastie en werd na de vergroting in 1321 bedacht met een enorm koperen beeld van Buddha. Een renovatie volgde tijdens de Ming-dynastie. Tijdens de Culturele Revolutie vervingen de barbaarse rode gardisten het grootste Buddhabeeld door een van Mao Zedong. Dat werd intussen verwijderd. De huidige vijf meter lange Buddha is dus een kopie. Hij zou vijftig ton wegen. De tempel, die men betreedt via een cipressenlaan, bevat vier zalen. In de vierde wacht de slapende Buddha. — verso: in inkt, " De Groote liggende Boeddha uit den Tempel van den slapenden Boeddha, gebouwd ± 800. Men bereikt den tempel door een prachtigen laan en de lotusbloemen, die in den na-zomer op hun mooist staan, zijn een bezoek wel waard". — in potlood, A21-65
