Anthropometric portrait of the Pnihing Chief at Long Kup in Borneo
Journey, on a commission basis, to Central Borneo with A.W. Nieuwenhuys 1898-1900.
Jean Demmeni was a marksman and photographer in service of the Dutch colonial army. Between 1893 and 1900 he accompanied three expeditions led by the researcher A.W. Nieuwenhuys to the interior of Borneo (Kalimantan). He took extensive series of photographs featuring the culture and surroundings of the Kayan and Dayaks people. At Van Nieuwenhuis’ request, he also made a series of anthropometric portraits of the natives.
