Housing development, Roelof Hartplein, Amsterdam, 1924-1927. Architect: G.J. Rutgers. Photographer:unknown.
The houses around the Roelof Hart square are part of the plan made by the architect H.P. Berlage for the undeveloped area south of Amsterdam. The City Council had asked him to design a plan to put an end to the overcrowded slums and to alleviate the housing shortage.
His 1915 plan for the New South district was both monumental and remarkable for its geometrical layout. It included long rows of facades bordering a strict, though harmonic pattern of thoroughfares and canals. Their uniformity was intended to promote the ideal of a classless society. Order and beauty were to uplift the working class. Much of the plan was entrusted to architects of the Amsterdamse School, who were familiar with constructing long housing blocks and who understood the art of subtle decoration. Moreover, as a rule, they shared Berlage’s socialist ideals.
