Oil company PAM
The house style of the oil company PAM (a division of the Steenkolen Handels Vereeniging - SHV) was designed in 1963 by Benno Wissing. Its core is a logo featuring a stylized red oil drop and the brand name in a sturdy black template type. The logo was used for in-house and outgoing stationery, everything being designed in a clear, uniform style.
The tanks and filling stations were painted bright white and displayed the new logo (with the exception of the tankers for domestic fuel oil that were painted black). Sketches and painting instructions helped adapt the design to the larger stations. One of these sketches is on view here.
It was decided to introduce the new house style to the public at one go. Therefore, all the PAM stations and tanks had to be repainted almost at the same time. PAM owned more than 270 stations and 160 tanks, making this a gigantic logistical operation.
