Dagboek van een plm. 65-jarige domineesvrouw; haar man is doopsgezind predikant, emeritus. Zij hebben twee kinderen, een tweeling, geboren in 1907: de zoon is cineast en fotograaf, de dochter verpleegster in Zuid-Afrika. Als spoedig na de inval in Nederland blijkt, dat haar brieven niet worden doorgestuurd, besluit de moeder een dagboek aan te leggen, gericht aan haar dochter, waaruit deze later een indruk kan krijgen van het leven in Nederland onder de bezetting. (Uitsluitend huiselijke en persoonlijke wederwaardigheden, anders het onderwerp van brieven uitmakend, wilde zij hierbij uitsluiten, hetgeen niet geheel consequent geschiedde). Zij begon hier niet direct mee, maar enige maanden later, naar schatting in september of oktober 1940; de intussen verlopen tijd recapituleerde zij. Het is een uitstekend dagboek geworden, algemeen oorlogsdagboek beperkt tot toestanden en gebeurtenissen in het binnenland. Het is met liefde gemaakt: is goed volledig en bevat tal van ingeplakte brieven, pamfletten, krantenknipsels, ansichten, foto's en meer dergelijke kenmerkende en verlevendigende documenten. Ook is het goed geschreven; helder, gevoelig en overwogen. Er spreekt Christenzin, vrouwelijk gevoel en moederliefde uit. - Eind 1942 moet het echtpaar uit Den Haag evacueren; zij komen te wonen in Velp. Na de oorlog bleek de dochter, die reeds vroeger aanpassingsmoeilijkheden scheen te hebben gehad, ongeneeslijk krankzinnig te zijn geworden. Vrij kort na de oorlog stierf de zoon.
