Viking treasure
Circa 600-1000 AD, earthenware, silver, Scandinavia
In 1996 a Viking hoard was found on the island of Wieringen. It consisted of jewelry, coins and cast bars of silver. The silver piece of coin jewelry bordered with pearls depicted here is part of the treasure. The coin is an Abbassid dirhem of calif Abu-al Abbas (al-Safah) (750-754 AD).
The owner of these objects, a Dane, apparently had brought his treasures to hide them in the Netherlands, planning to retrieve them at a later date, which he then failed to do. Because of this hoard we know that some Vikings used to settle in our country for shorter or longer periods of time and used it as a base of operations. The dates of the most recent coins indicate that the hoard was buried around 850 AD, in a small earthernware pot covered with a tuft of grass. The objects were bought by the museum from the people who found them.
