In the garden
Internee camps were set up in hospitals, prisons, schools, monasteries, fenced-off neighbourhoods in cities, huts, sheds or barracks in the jungle. In the beginning, the inmates were allowed to walk in and out the camp, but soon the Japanese had the camps fenced off by a high bamboo wall or barbed wire. Round the camp stood watchtowers and a soldier stood guard at the gate.
