Marlene Dietrich by Pieter Kuhn.
Few designers have managed to depict great Hollywood stars on lithographs with the same precision as shown on the poster for ‘The Devil is a Woman’, the famous movie starring Marlene Dietrich dated 1935. In 2006, independent research on a small number of designs from the EYE collection initially thought to have been made by anonymous artists led to the conclusion that none other than Pieter Kuhn, illustrator of the legendary comic “De avonturen van Kapitein Rob” (The adventures of Captain Rob), had made this poster.
During a short period of approximately three years, Kuhn – who always carried out his advertising work anonymously - designed some of the finest Dutch posters made in the 1930s. The lettering and the use of a single dominant color on the posters are characteristic of his work.
