- Sarasvati is de vrouwelijke wederhelft van Brahma, de godin van wijsheid, wetenschap en welsprekenheid, de patrones der schone kunsten. Zij is de moeder der heilige Vedas en houdt als symbool daarvan een boek van palmbladeren in de hand. Men brengt haar offers aan de oevers van rivieren, want zij wordt ook als symbool van het vruchtbaarmakende rivierwater aanbeden. Zowel in India als in Bali, want ook daar viert men een feest ter ere van haar. Men roept haar aan bij de plechtigheden, waarbij aan de goden om overvloedig irrigatiewater wordt gesmeekt. De Baliers duiden de gewone huishagedis soms met de naam Sarasvati aan en zien in dat dier de drager van eigenschappen van het over de velden vruchtbaar makende water. Sarasvati wordt afgebeeld met een tot vier hoofden, soms vier, soms twee armen met als versierselen een bidsnoer, palmbladboek, lotus en soms een of ander muziekinstrument. De pauw is haar rijdier. Dit exemplaar, van Bali, vertoont geen enkele van de voor deze godin kenmerkende attributen en het verschil tussen de afbeelding van Sarasvati en Laksmi sri, de gemalin van Vishnu is zo gering, dat gemakkelijk verwarring kan ontstaan. Beiden zijn zo tot vorstendochters of zo men wil aristocraten echtgenoten geworden, dat aan verdere aanduiding als lotus of palmbladboek geen plaats is gegeven. Dit beeld behoort tot een groep van 28 beelden (15-156 t/m 15-182b), gezamenlijk een pantheon van Balinese godheden vormend, dat getoond werd op de Nederlandse koloniale afdeling op de wereldtentoonstelling te Parijs in 1900. Speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling heeft C.M. Pleyte, conservator van 's Rijks Etnografisch Museum in Leiden, deze beelden op Bali laten vervaardigen. Met behulp van enkele priesters selecteerde hij de relevante beelden die vervolgens door Balinese houtsnijders werden nagemaakt.
