Peilschaal
- Description
- Het Amsterdams Peil was een vastgelegd niveau. Tot het einde van de 19de eeuw werden hoogten in Nederland ten opzichte van dat peil aangegeven. Het kwam overeen met de gemiddelde vloedstand van het IJ in Amsterdam, toen de stad nog in open verbinding met de Zuiderzee stond. In 1684 is het zogenaamde stadspeil vastgelegd door een aantal marmeren platen in Amsterdamse sluizen in te metselen. Later groeide de behoefte aan een nauwkeuriger niveaumeting. Het NAP werd toen vastgesteld. Dit Normaal Amsterdams Peil ligt ongeveer 9 centimeter boven het gemiddeld zeeniveau bij Den Helder.
