- Vanaf 1730 komt het bekleden van gebruiksvoorwerpen met segrijnleer zeer in de mode. Segrijnleer is gemaakt van de huiden van roggen en haaien. Met dit leer worden foedralen van luxueuze reisbestekken en chatelaines bekleed. Vrouwen namen een chatelaine mee om bijvoorbeeld hun naaigerei bij de hand te hebben. De Engelse 'East India Trade Company' bracht de vissenhuiden naar het westen. De V.O.C. verhandelde ze tussen de verschillende Aziatische landen. Deze 'intra-aziatische handel' leverde veel winst op.
