- Description
- The Dutch made a journey to the court of the Shogun, Japan’s military ruler, to bring him gifts. In the first half of the 18th century, various animals were taken to Edo, including hounds, Persian horses, birds, camels and even an elephant. Most of these animals then became pets or served as attractions. This picture shows a Dutch group traveling with an elephant.
