On 7 January 1937, the wedding of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernard took place. Hundreds of thousands of school children aged between 6 and 18 received a rhyme print with a poem by P.C. Boutens and wood carvings by A. van der Vossen.
The poem by Boutens caused quite a stir as it was apparently incomprehensible. Boutens replicated calmly: “In twenty years’ time no one will remember what the papers wrote. My poem, however, will still exist; it doesn’t matter if people don’t understand it until then; the importance of this wedding will also last much longer than twenty years”.
