Sword
Circa 800 BC, bronze (urn), wood, iron and gold (sword), hight 50 cm (urn), 46 cm (sword), Oss (province of Noord-Brabant)
This sword was found in a bronze urn (situla), together with a dead man's cremated remains and various other objects, such as metal rings, knifes, pins, horse bits and a grindstone.
The blade is engraved and the wooden grip is decorated with encrusted pieces of gold leaf . On the sword bits of textile remain, indicating that it must have been wrapped in cloth. In the early Iron Age, rich and powerful people - kings - were buried in situla's with these types of additional gifts.
