See here, o youth! to pass the time, the story or Urban and his wife]
Catchpenny prints were popular among a wide public of all age groups. The story of Urban shows that reality was not disguised for children. In the title - “See here, oh youth! to pass the time” – a youthful audience is specifically addressed. The images and texts teach them how, after his wedding feast and first child, Urban follows his lusts, plunders the household cashbox and goes on a spree. He even gives his wife’s string of pearls to a ‘filthy whore’. He is found guilty, but this is of no avail, as he keeps finding his pleasure with the whores. When the money runs out, remorse comes in and then his virtuous spouse forgives him.
