- Description
- This sea view was painted on the spot. It expresses Van Gogh’s enthusiasm for the ever-changing colours of the Mediterranean, which he described as ‘colours like that of mackerel’: green, violet and blue with alternating pink and grey tints. He signed the painting in a distinct shade of bright red quite conspicuously set in the foreground: it was intended as a ‘red note in the green’.
