Private houses, Stadionplein Amsterdam, 1929-1931. Architects: A. Eibink and J.A. Snellebrand. Photographer: Hans Spies|Netherlands Photography Museum.
Eibink and Snellebrand’s earliest work belongs to the Amsterdamse School, an architectural style that blossomed in the Netherlands between roughly 1910 and the outbreak of World War II. The housing complex bordering the square near the Olympic stadium in Amsterdam was completed in 1929. It was the first project the two architects had realized in seven years. In the meantime, the Amsterdamse School had lost its spiritual father, Michel de Klerk, and new building styles had begun to win ground.
Among them the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid (New Objectivity): practical designs based on functional and constructional requirements. The austere, geometric style of the buildings bordering the square is a prime example of the new orientation in architecture: a rectangular, unbroken apartment block with eaves partly overlapping each other. The white balconies on the side wall, combined with bay windows on every floor, give a rhythmic aspect to the façade.
