Jeugdstorm
Classrooms were brightened up by M.A. Koekkoek's famous school posters until well into the 1950s. Koekkoek produced drawings of nature since the beginning of his career. He was so good at this that publisher Wolters from Groningen commissioned 24 school posters of animals in their natural habitat. The posters were immensely popular. During the war years, Koekkoek produced work of an entirely different kind.
He created propaganda posters commissioned by the Nederlandsch Arbeidsfront (Dutch Worker Front) and the Nationale Jeugdstorm (the Dutch Hitler Youth). His work was praised so effusively that he became known as the best poster designer of his age. But Koekkoek demanded a high fee for his creations and considering the fact that budgets were usually limited, his services could only be retained occasionally. Koekkoek died in 1944.
